Do Curly Hair Shampoo Products Make Hair Curlier

Sunday, June 19th, 2011

Do Curly Hair Shampoo Products Make Hair CurlierAlthough it might seem like a curly hair shampoo product may make natural curly hair even curlier, it probably won’t.  Of course there is an exception to every rule, but in general, curly hair shampoos only encourages curls.

Curly hair expert and celebrity hairstylist Robert Hallowell works with many celebrities with natural curls.  He explained to me that curly hair shampoo products aren’t designed to amp up curls, but merely to provide a more gentle cleansing.

Curly and textured hair is more delicate and tends to be chronically dry.  Therefore curly shampoo products are designed to provide gentle cleansing which won’t strip the hair of natural moisture.

For curls to form properly the tresses must be well hydrated and frizz free.  A curly hair shampoo designed only to gently clean will not necessarily encourage curls to form.

To amp up natural curls be sure to do a final rinse in cool or cold water, towel blot (not rub) and use products such as curl creams, gels or similar to help define ringlets.  Whenever possible use either a long finger diffuser to enhance curls or plop and allow hair to air dry.

Betty White, born January 17, 1922, is considered by many to be a National Treasure.

She is beloved by young and old alike.  A fan driven Facebook campaign won White a hosting job on Saturday Night Light for which she won awards.

Of course she’s fabulous in the film “The Proposal” with Sandra Bullock, who she is reportedly close to.

When Bullock went through her shocking divorce, White was one of her confidantes.

Curlformers Make Dreams Of Gorgeous Curls Come True

Curlformers Make Dreams Of Gorgeous Curls Come TrueI remember the first time I ever heard about Curlformers.  I was sitting in Celeb Hairstylist Robert Hallowell’s LA kitchen in May of 2009.

I was at Robert’s kitchen table drinking tea and he was sprawled out on the floor rooting through his massive refrigerator.  Robert’s precocious cat, Handsome, was prowling the space between Robert and where I sat at his table.  While I peppered him with my normal 1001 hair questions he would answer, stopping periodically to bark “no shopping” at Handsome as the adorable cat launched a sneak attack on some of the food temporarily displaced from the refrigerator.

Curlformers Not Curlfarmers

Robert and I were discussing how to achieve gorgeous curls on wavy tresses.  With his head partially buried inside the bowels of the refrigerator he barked “Curlformers”.   I thought I had misheard him to say Curlfarmers.   A bit of hilarious repartee ensued until Robert had convinced me that Curlformers were these revolutionary patented curling tools that he absolutely adored and not curls harvested from a farm somewhere in England.

He explained how to use the new curling tool but I couldn’t picture how it worked in my head.  Jumping up he ran off into his home salon and came striding out with a few of the Curlformers in his hand.  He gave me a quick demonstration of how you use the hook to pull the hair through the Curlformer and how it naturally springs into place.  Impressive. Curl Changing Hair History

Curl Changing Hair History

According to Vogue’s 1977 Body And Beauty Book by Bronwen Meredith, Karl Ludwig Nessler under the Nestle banner invented a “wonder machine for perming” hair in 1906.  By 1920 the machine hit the masses and the business of making curls available for everyone was the hottest new hair changing option.

As Bronwen Meredith put it, the new perm machine “changed the manes of the masses.”  Curls were forever changed at this point in history.  Those with natural curls had new options and those with stick straight strands could have man made curls and waves.

The advertisements for the Nestle Wave touted the fact that ‘there is no difference between Nature’s Wave and The Nestle Wave.’

Historic Curl Changing Events

Looking back at that 1920s curl changing historic event, a lot of the texturizing hairstyling philosophies and practices which are popular today, were started way back then. Continue reading “Curl Changing Hair History” »

Is Your Hairdresser A Technophobe Or Technophile?

Tuesday, July 27th, 2010

Is Your Hairdresser A Technophobe Or Technophile? On a scale of 1-10, is your hair stylist a technophobe or a technophile?

A technophobe is a person who dislikes or avoids new technology.  The technophobes of the world feel more comfortable with pencils, paper, flat file folders and dislike computers, text messaging or anything that is obviously wired.

A technophile is the exact opposite of the technophobe.  A true technophile thinks technology’s cool, can cope with its frustrations, and enjoys figuring out ways to use it to improve your life.

While it’s possible to be a great hairdresser and a technophobe today’s hair clients are transitioning to so many new technologies they are showing a preference for hair stylists who are technophiles.  Continue reading “Is Your Hairdresser A Technophobe Or Technophile?” »
