Recently I received an email about an article I had written about long hair informing me the author was obviously “clueless” about the topic.

Maybe I’m indeed clueless about long hair, but after having long hair (6″ below my waist and holding strong) since 1988 I think I have some insider’s knowledge of the topic.

Not to mention my experiences going to cosmetology school and writing over 3,000 articles about hair topics (consumer and professional) over the past 10+ years.

It should be noted the writer of the “you’re clueless about long hair” email was promoting their own hair website and letting me know I should be using their work instead of my own articles.  OK.  Well a little strange way to make a new friend, but whatever.

At any rate, the number one email I am receiving right now is about a wide range of home hair coloring disasters.  It is very frustrating to me because it’s impossible to really help someone with a hair color disaster via email, or even over the phone. (more…)

I have been researching and writing about consumer and professional hair topics since 1995 when I first founded the hair site pre-dating HairBoutique.com.

I have also attended cosmetology schools (more than one) and taken more classes on hair, beauty and related topics than I did for my Bachelors, Masters or Ph.D programs in business.  I think its fair to say I know a few things about hair.

I also know that not everyone agrees with me, but all I can do is provide my own personal thoughts.

Can you Achieve Gorgeous Hair Color At Home?

With that all said, I do believe that some hair consumers can successfully achieve gorgeous hair color at home.  I would not go so far as to make that a blanket statement that everyone can do so.  I for one do not do my own hair color at home.  I used to do it.  In fact, I did it for years with a box of Clairol Nice n Easy platinum blonde. Ashlee Simpson-Wentz (born October 3, 1984)  is no stranger to acting on television.  For those with short memory spans, Ashlee, who was just Simpson then (2002), co-starred on the beloved WB/CW show 7th Heaven.  At the time she appeared on the show as Cecilia Smith, Ashlee was very blonde with hair that ranged from medium to a little bit longer.

Things Have Changed For Ashlee Simpson-Wentz

Some things have changed since Ashlee had her breakout role on 7th Heaven some seven years ago (2002-2004).  The actress, songwriter, performer has changed her hair color multiple times morphing from her 7th Heaven beach blonde to dark chocolate, light chocolate, platinum blonde and Merlot red.

Ashlee also has appeared on her own and her sister’s reality TV shows, had some controversial plastic surgery, married and had a beautiful son.

When I went to cosmetology school I immediately was drawn to two different hair interests: hair color and creating elegant and complicated updos.

Yeah, that sounds a little bipolar but I will confess I also was not all that excited about cutting hair or doing certain types of chemicals.

Learning To Cut And Color Hair With Mannequins

When you first start cutting hair in beauty school as a student, you always use a mannequin.  Well, unless you can get a student to let you chop away with abandon (which rarely happens), the mannequins are usually the first to be subjected to your scissors.

The same is true about hair color.  Which is why the closet in the Entry Level Class Hair Lab was overflowing with mannequins with melted scalps (from too much bleach), big chunks of missing hair and oddly hued tiger stripes. (more…)

Beth Minardi is one of the most widely respected, top hair color gurus in the United States.  She is an expert colorist, a color educator and a renowned hair color correction expert.

If Beth can’t repair a botch hair color job, probably no one else could.
