Topknot Hairstyle How To

Topknot Hairstyle How ToThe only requirement for a great topknot hairstyle is hair long enough to be pulled up on top of your head.  If your own hair isn’t long enough you can also blur the lines with fusion extensions.

Topknots are actually one of the best go-to hairstyles for just about any imaginable hairstyle event from everyday hair wear to a formal wedding, Prom or party hair event.  The beauty of topknots is that they’re easy to create, look different on every size and shape of head and work with just about every type of hair and texture.

The different between topknots and regular buns, chignons, ballerina buns or twists?  Topknots are positioned at the top of the head and resemble a tight knot.

Ideally topknots are created on either naturally straight or temporarily straightened hair to achieve the sleek knot style.  Topknots can be glammed up by combing them with a myriad of headbands, tiaras or embellished bobby pins, bun covers, barrettes or jeweled combs.

Topknots can be worn halfway between the crown and hairline, closer to the hairline, adjacent to the crown or with an assortment of parts and fringes.  Topknots can also be dressed up with a few loose strands teased around the hairline. Continue reading “Topknot Hairstyle How To” »

Decorative Hair Comb Hairstyle How To

Decorative Hair Comb Hairstyle How ToDecorative Hair Comb Hairstyle How To

Decorative hair combs can be crafted out of a vast number of materials ranging from natural materials such as wood and stone to ivory and real tortoiseshell.  As concern for the animals was raised, some materials were outlawed.

When tortoiseshell became prohibited a faux tortoise shell was developed from cellulose and plastic.  Ivory is also forbidden to be used in combs or other types of hair adornments.

The best quality combs are hand crafted and polished by hand.  Such is the case with the The France Luxe Classic European Side Combs which offer timeless beauty. I’ve personally owned and worn these gorgeous combs for over 10 years.

Depending on your hair type, texture, length and desired hairstyle, these European style combs can be worn as a decorative accessory for a classic French twist or a more modern twist with a fanned out top tail or similar.  These combs are also functional and can be used to hold hair in place.

Depending on how much hair you have, the combs may or may not work best as an adornment or an anchor.   You can wear one or more of these combs with straight, wavy, curly or even kinky hair.

Usually you will need enough hair to be secured by the combs, but if your hair is fine or slippery you can use the bobby pin secret to anchor the combs into your hair (see below for details). Continue reading “Decorative Hair Comb Hairstyle How To” »

Naturally Curly Hair Jungle Frizz

Naturally Curly Hair Jungle Frizz Naturally Curly Hair Jungle Frizz

Over the past year I’ve been researching frizzy hair.  I have naturally wavy hair with some loose curl patterns throughout the edges and along the nape of my neck.

Although I have spent the last 20 years learning how to care for my hair and avoid the majority of frizz, it will still attack at random moments.  My own hair is most susceptible to bone dry frizz related to the genetic shape of my hair and natural moisture loss.

During my research I have talked to hair experts who have expertise in natural textures.  They have helped be categorize frizz into general categories to help understand how the frizz occurs and how to treat it.

Frizzy Hair Categories

After spending considerable time researching frizz, which can strike anyone, with any type of hair I wrote a blog about the various frizz categories.

Of course after the blog was completely finished and published I discovered I had forgotten a very important category of frizz.  I forget the jungle frizz category.  Jungle frizz is unique because it is specifically named by HairBoutique.com’s Edan Kencayd to describe the frizz that descends upon her natural curls.

Octopus Clip Hair Accessory For Curly Hair

Octopus Clip Hair Accessory For Curly Hair

Octopus Clip Hair Accessory For Curly HairOctopus hair clips were named because they do have a similar shape to a real live octopus. Of course a real octopus doesn’t usually have a spring mounted at the top of their head like the hair clip variety.

Ironically many types of hair clips are named after animals they favor such as Alligator Clips, Crocodile Clips, Spider Clips to name just a few.

Octopus hair clips work for all types of hair from stick straight to naturally wavy, curly, kinky, coily and coiled.  Some types of clips are not as good for natural curls and textures, but octopus clips work great to encapsulate corkscrews.

Sometimes the octopus clip is referred to by specific manufacturers or brands as a spider, spider claw or spider leg claws.

Octopus hair clips are great for securing a head full of curls in the hot summer months to keep the heat off the back of the neck where frizz might easily form.  Continue reading “Octopus Clip Hair Accessory For Curly Hair” »

Hair Accessories – What Does Crystal Encrusted Really Mean?

Wednesday, June 1st, 2011

Hair Accessories What Does Crystal Encrusted Really Mean? How many times have you glimpsed various hair accessories like headbands, barrettes, hair clips and similar which said “crystal encrusted?”  What does that really mean?

I’ve been buying, wearing, cherishing and selling hair accessories for many years.  Even as a child I was fascinated with ponytail holders and barrettes which shimmered and sparkled, courtesy of crystals, rhinestones and similar glass based decorations.

Crystal is a very high-quality glass that can be colored, cut and faceted for a magnificent brilliant finish.  The term crystal can also refer to colorless semiprecious quartz stone or rock crystals.
