How Nanosized Particles May Affect Skin Care Products

How Nanosized Particles May Affect Skin Care ProductsThe rapidly growing field of nanotechnology and its future use in cosmetic products holds both enormous potential and potential concern for consumers. Currently, major cosmetic manufacturers have imposed a voluntary ban on the use of nano-particles in products while they await a ruling from the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) regarding the safety of this technology.

However, these manufacturers know that when ingredients in products such as sunscreens and anti-aging products are converted into nano-sized particles, the end product displays unique properties that can benefit the skin in ways that otherwise could not be achieved using larger-sized particles.

Speaking at a past Annual Meeting of the American Academy of Dermatology (Academy), dermatologist Adnan Nasir, MD, PhD, FAAD, clinical assistant professor in the department of dermatology at the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill, presented an overview of nanotechnology and how nano-particles may eventually be used in cosmetic products.

“Research in the area of nanotechnology has increased significantly over the years, and I think there will be considerable growth in this area in the near future,” said Dr. Nasir. “The challenge is that a standard has not been set yet to evaluate the safety and efficacy of topical products that contain nanosized particles.” Continue reading “How Nanosized Particles May Affect Skin Care Products” »

Sun Shiny Summer Hair Color How ToSun Shiny Summer Hair Color How To

Laying out by the beach and soaking in the sun’s rays poolside may be great for your tan, but not so great on your hair.

We’ve got your head covered with these five tips from Serge Normant at John Frieda Salon’s master colorist Kari Hill to keep your colored hair looking fabulous all sun-shiny summer long.

1. UV Protection

When protecting your skin from the sun’s rays, don’t forget your hair as well. UV protection for color treated hair can be found in sprays, shampoos and conditioners. Spray UV protection on hair and slick back in a chic ponytail or bun. This will also protect your scalp.

2. Pre-pool Rinse

Before jumping into the pool, wet your color treated hair with bottled water to dilute the harsh chemicals in the chlorine. If at the beach, leave in conditioners with an SPF will protect from color fading and damage, as well as supplement as a nice treatment. Continue reading “Sun Shiny Summer Hair Color How To” »

Hairstyling Tips: Prevent Fine Hair From Tangling

Friday, April 4th, 2008

Although it might seem the least likely texture to tangle, fine hair definitely has tangling challenges. Especially when fine hair is damaged or allowed to be blown about in the wind.

Fine hair that is long is also more prone to tangling and some will find that the tangles form tiny little knots at the nape of the neck if the tangles are not dealt with immediately.

Most hair experts will tell you to deal with tangles effectively with either rinse-out conditioners (right after you shampoo), leave-in conditioners (after you towel blot) or deep conditioners.

While that advice MAY work for some people with fine strands, for the most part it does not work. Why? Because fine hair tends to flatten easily and while rinse out, leave-in or deep conditioners might help initially with removing tangles, the likely result is flat hair. Or even worse….the beginning of oil slicks from too much conditioner.

If you read the advice to use conditioners for thin or fine hair, throw it away.
