My lifelong need, OK, make that an obsession, to always learn new things kicked into gear when I discovered I could go to braiding school. I have always loved braids from the time I was a little girl. Of course having long hair means that braids are always a popular styling option. The idea that I could learn to braid at a beauty college was a major bonus.

After deciding I definitely wanted to take on the challenge I convinced my friend Lance to go with me. Not only did he have a cosmetology school background, he actually grew up in that general neighborhood and knew his way around. I made a deal with him where he would drive every day to class and in exchange I would pay for his class.

My school offers both day and night programs for hair and skin. Before any of the students start their program of study, they attend an initiaion day designed to help all the newbies figure out the rules and regs of the school. My initiaion day was the Saturday before my first Monday of classes. Initiation was set to start at 9:30am. I was told not to arrive too early because the day classes started at 9:00 am.

Of course I was so excited and nervous that I actually arrived at the school at 8:45 am. I was instructed to come through the student entrance and to wear “all black”. There I was, completely covered in black, waiting anxiously for the initiation to begin.

Once I decided to “go for it” and apply to night cosmo school, I was amazed at all the pieces of paper that I had to pull together. Many of the items are required for the State of Texas as much as they are required for the school. One item that struck me as funny was that I had to provide a copy of my high school diploma.

I explained to the admissions people at my school that I had a B.A from the University of Missouri, a M.A. from St. Louis University and several credit hours towards a Ph.D. at St. Louis U. I also have business certificates from Washington University and grad credits from other universities.

Like so many events in my life, finding myself sitting in the waiting room at one of the many Dallas metro based beauty (cosmotology) schools near the end of July happened purely by “accident”. One of my HairBoutique.com employees who is currently in night beauty school was seriously considering transferring to a new school. I decided to go with my employee when he visited a well-known school because I was very curious. Also, I always had a secret desire to attend beauty school myself and figured this would be my chance to check one out.

In the past I had actually visited several beauty schools at the urging of Hillary, a former HB.com employee (now a full time make-up artist) who thought I definitely should go to school and get my cosmetology license. I had not been impressed enough with any of the schools I had visited to make the committment to actually go.
