Chris Rock’s Good Hair Blows Out Historical African American Hair Secrets

Thursday, November 5th, 2009

Comedian Chris Rock has encountered both rave reviews as well as snickers and boos in response to his new documentary, Good Hair.  While some people have enjoyed the film, others are not as happy with Rock’s viewpoints.

Chris Rock on the other hand is gleeful about shining the light on secrets, which he says are “bad for the human spirit.”

As a result of his own daughter’s angst about not having “good hair” he set out to examine the African American history around having good or bad hair.  As Chris as explained in interviews with the media African American hair has been burdened by the twin legacies of slavery and racism with strong pressure to compare their hair to Caucasian hair.

Historically in the African American community, “good hair” is categorized as soft, smooth and manageable. “Bad hair” is typically called short and “nappy.”   Traditionally when trying to alter bad hair and transition it to good there has been the adoption of chemicals and hair weaves. (more…)

T.R. Knight Has Lots of Endings And New Beginnings - Grey’s Anatomy To Parade

Sunday, October 25th, 2009

Actor T.R. Knight (Theodore Raymond Knight) has been recently making the rounds of the talk shows.  He was on Ellen and a few days ago he was on Bonnie Hunt.

I adore Bonnie’s show and watch it faithfully.  Although I was raised Irish Catholic in the Midwest, I grew up in St. Louis which is not exactly Chicago, but I did spend a lot of time in Chicago growing up.

(Image of TR Knight as Dr. George O’Malley on Grey’s Anatomy - Season One - The Self Destruct Buttom - ABC.com - All Rights Reserved).

Bonnie had Grey’s Anatomy alum T.R. Knight (Dr. George O’Malley) run through a line of well wishers wearing a bright blue track suit which he was supposed to rip off as he approached the stage.

Almost like the kind of line that fighters or football players run through.  A spotlight captured T.R. as he ran towards Bonnie’s desk.  An announcer provided TR’s stats saying he had been on Grey’s Anatomy for five seasons as the lovable Dr. George O’Malley”

Unfortunately all did not go as planned with the track suit which the actor was supposed to rip off.  T.R. had to sit on the floor by Bonnie’s desk to rip the suit off.  The actor waved hello to the live audience.

He told Bonnie “How are you doing.  It’s very nice to meet you” and “the snaps were pretty strong, I haven’t worn a lot of track suits, I know it’s a surprise.”  Bonnie was laughing and seemed quite amused.

TR said “thank you for that because I was going to feel a little left out.”  TR was laughing. (more…)

Chef Blythe Beck Of Central 214 Is Fabulous!

Sunday, October 25th, 2009

Although I had originally read the summary for Oxygen’s Naughty Kitchen reality show with Chef Blythe Beck of Dallas’ Central 214 I had not had a chance to watch any of the episodes until today (Sunday, October 25, 2009).  Now that I’ve watched the show, I’m now totally addicted.

(Image of Chef Blythe Beck - Oxygen’s Naughty Kitchen - All Rights Reserved).

I’ve never had the opportunity to eat at Central 214, but have been to Hotel Palomar.  Even though Naughty Kitchen - Episode #101 shows Blythe receiving a scathing two Star review from The Dallas Morning News (DMN), I’m still going to make it a point to go eat there.

I love Blythe’s fire and zest.  Yes, I know it’s a reality TV show, but Blythe comes across as very real.  I wanted to climb inside my TV set and put my arms around Blythe to give her a hug as she cried over the nasty DMN review.

If anything, I’m going to take the DMN restaurant reviews less seriously.  Yes, of course the reviewer is entitled to their opinions, but it’s still heart wrenching because obviously Blythe is hard working with tremendous energy and presence. (more…)
