How To Create 1940s Pompadour Or Similar Hairline Hair Bump

Tuesday, November 10th, 2009

Hairstyles follow fashion and Tracy Reese’s 2010 Runway Show displayed a messy, new-age version of a 1940s classic pompadour sure to show up on Red Carpets and fashion shoots in 2010.  The pompadour label has long been replaced by the 2009 hair bump tag.

Key hair stylist for the show, Jeanie Siphu told the fashion media she created the big hair masterpiece by laying a series of three different ponytails from the front of the hairline towards the back of head.

Although the front of the hair was airy and beautifully backcombed, from the crown down the hair was worn sleek and chic.  The bottom of the hairdo was finished off in a coiled knot or twist.  Although the new-age hair bump was a take-off of the 1940s pompadour the hairdo was messy.

In fact, in the October 19th episode (Episode 905) of 2009 Dancing With The Stars (DWTS) Lacey Schwimmer had a similar pompadour hairstyle similar to the hair bump shown off in the Tracey Reese show.

How To Copy The 2009 Messy Pompadour

This hairstyle is best re-created on medium to thick hair that is naturally straight or slightly wavy.

If you prefer not to backcomb your hair you can clip-in one or two bangs which you have pre-teased and use them for the front bump.  Or you can pin the bangs under a layer of top hair.

Another option includes using a hair ratt. (more…)

1.  Comfort Is Key - Select a hair length and style that is fun, easy to maintain and makes you feel great about yourself.  It’s important you enjoy your hair.  Love how you wear your hair and enjoy it.  Wear it for you and no one else.

2.  Have A Go Anywhere Hairstyle - Always have a classic hairstyle you can easily create for both casual and formal events.  You may wish to keep hair accessories keyed to your various hair styles such as a jeweled headband or clips for twists or updos.

Chris Rock’s Good Hair Blows Out Historical African American Hair Secrets

Thursday, November 5th, 2009

Comedian Chris Rock has encountered both rave reviews as well as snickers and boos in response to his new documentary, Good Hair.  While some people have enjoyed the film, others are not as happy with Rock’s viewpoints.

Chris Rock on the other hand is gleeful about shining the light on secrets, which he says are “bad for the human spirit.”

As a result of his own daughter’s angst about not having “good hair” he set out to examine the African American history around having good or bad hair.  As Chris as explained in interviews with the media African American hair has been burdened by the twin legacies of slavery and racism with strong pressure to compare their hair to Caucasian hair.

Historically in the African American community, “good hair” is categorized as soft, smooth and manageable. “Bad hair” is typically called short and “nappy.”   Traditionally when trying to alter bad hair and transition it to good there has been the adoption of chemicals and hair weaves. (more…)

DIEGO BINETTI SPRING ‘10 - September 12th

Hair by Sebastian Professional

Last night, Thomas Dunkin led the Sebastian Professional stylist design team at the Spring ‘10 Diego Binetti show.

Thomas and team created a modern, textured twist on structured braids echoing the unique individualism and carefree youth inspiration in Diego Binetti’s spring ‘10 collection.

See the attached “how-to” instructions in which Sebastian Professional shares expert hairdresser Thomas Dunkin’s tips for translating this runway ‘do to real life MUST.

Inspiration:
Diego Binetti’s Spring ‘10 Collection is for the romantic.  Her steadfast elegance, poise and confidence are a constant for all who know her, but she’s not without a coy rebellious side.

Much like Peter Lindberg’s strikingly beautiful black and white photos of the ‘90s, Binetti’s women compel admiration and awe. (more…)
