Hollywood Hairdresser Robert Hallowell’s Life And Times

Sunday, September 27th, 2009

If you’ve been reading any of my Blogs (Hollywood & Mane, HairBoutique Blog) or my regular columns in 101 Celebrity Hairstyles, Short Cuts Magazine, HairBoutique.com or The Examiner over the past 10 years you may already have read enough about Robert Hallowell to last you a lifetime.

(Image of Robert Hallowell - May 2009 in Los Angeles, California - Photo by Karen Marie Shelton & Edan Kencayd - HairBoutique.com - All Rights Reserved).

I find Robert, or Robair to his friends, so incredibly fascinating I can’t stop covering his life which is truly like living in a reality show. Yes, I have written volumes about many many other famous hairdressers, but I still keep circling back to Robert on a constant basis.

Of course I understand their concerns.  One misquoted comment could destroy an up and coming hair, make-up or fashion styling in an instant.   They could be drummed out of Hollywood forever.

Robert named his hair company The Kitchen Beautician because he so often ends up working in the kitchens of his celebrity clients’ homes, sometimes using ingredients out of their cabinets.

I have had the pleasure of hanging out in Robert’s famous kitchen on more than one occasion and for hours on end while his beloved pets - Ava the dog and her two cat siblings, Precious and Sweetpea, wander through towards the outdoors set in the amazing patio/deck built high into the hills of LA. Ashlee Simpson Wentz’s Red Hair Is All About Silhouette And Light

Thursday, September 17th, 2009

I recently flew from Dallas to Los Angeles to spend time with longtime Hollywood Hairdresser Robert Hallowell.  Over the years Robert, whom I adore, has been beyond generous with his time and willingness to share information about his hair and make-up work in the TV and film industry.

While hanging out at the famous Hilton Checkers downstairs lounge I asked Robert his thoughts about Ashlee Simpson’s current red hair for The CW’s new Melrose Place.

Even though Robert hasn’t personally worked with Ash, he thinks “she lovely” and has followed her well-documented hair color history where she transitioned through a wide range of hair colors from baby blonde to Raven black and ultimately a variety of red hues, which she appears to prefer.

Since her marriage to Pete Wentz and the birth of her baby boy Ash, as her family calls her, has stayed close to red based hues floating up and down from lighter to slighter dark. (more…)

Cutting & Styling Hair With Razors To Create Shattered Bob Hairstyles

Tuesday, August 4th, 2009

Using a razor to cut hair is not new.  In fact, it’s been used by hairdressers for many years.

Some of the best hairstylists use razors to create dramatic and high fashion styles for runways.  Which explains why razor hair cutting is more popular in Europe than in the United States.  Many in the hair profession believe to achieve the most finished results for a tailored hair cut, the razor is the best hair cutting tool to use.

Note: For some images of razored hairstyles check out:  Razor Sharp: Shredded, Chopped & Sliced Hair

Vivian MacKinder, my own personal hairdressing heroine (who I recently saw and interviewed at Cosmoprof 2009), is probably one of the most skilled hair cutters with a razor of any hair professional I have yet to meet in the hair world.  Watching Vivian work with a razor is like watching a sculptor with their special tools.

Note: To read more about the amazing Vivian MacKinder please check out:  The Evolution Of Vivienne MacKinder

Vivian visited the Paul Mitchell school when I was there attending classes and demonstrated several of her techniques.  It was one of the highlights of my attendance at the school.  She also make some very special hair cutting razors available for purchase.  Yes I did buy the razor with some back blades. HairBoutique.com Road Trip To Viceroy Hotel - Palm Springs

Saturday, August 1st, 2009

As I reported recently, the HairBoutique.com Road Trip Team consisting of myself and Marketing Director Edan Kencayd recently covered the world famous Cosmoprof 2009 in Las Vegas, Nevada.

While we were there we also attended and covered the Internationally known NAHA 2009 hair awards.

We even had the honor of interviewing some of the impressive winners.

(Image of one of three pools at the stunning VICEROY PALM SPRINGS 415 South Belardo Road Palm Springs, California 92262 - Reservations 800 670 6184 - All Rights Reserved).

For some reason when Edan and I go on HairBoutique Road Trips to report on hair, beauty and fashion events, crazy things often happen.  Such was the case with our recent trip to Cosmoprof.

Due to a weird air travel snafu we found ourselves flying to Palm Springs, California instead of Las Vegas.  From Palm Springs we had to drive almost six hours to Las Vegas in the middle of pitch black desert in a sparkling white Lincoln Town Car with an extended wheel base.  Hey, I told you weird things happen to us on our HairBoutique Road Trips. Celeb Stylist George Papanikolas Created Britney’s Blonde Tresses For Circus Tour

Monday, June 8th, 2009

Approximately one year ago I had the great fortune to chat with celeb hair guru George Papanikolas about his work at the famous Chris McMillan Salon.

A side note to that conversation, he told me he was doing the color and style for Friday Night Lights star Minka Kelly.  Honestly I had never seen the show before and decided to go and watch previous episodes to catch a glimpse of Minka’s hair color.

You guessed it, I got totally addicted to the show.  Yes, Minka’s hair color knocked my socks off, no surprise because George did the color, but I loved her work on the show.  Actually I loved the show.

OK, OK….it’s set in Texas and that helps, but seriously the acting rocks. Minka is amazing in the role.  Of course it doesn’t hurt that she has eye popping, mouth dropping hair color courtesy of George.
