How To Create A Cinnabun For Your Long Hair

Saturday, March 20th, 2010

How to Make a Cinnamon Bun (Cinnabun)

Chiseling two cinnabuns along the hairline of a model for a romance novel cover shoot was the ultimate death of a recent Shear Genius 3 contestant.  The judges instantly recognized the popular buns and deducted major points.

While cinnamon buns are probably not appropriate for a professional model shoot, they are idea for people with long hair.  Why?  It keeps the hair easily tucked and safe from snagging or ripping.

(This hair bun when twisted and twirled correctly looks very much like the dessert except without the icing)

The cinnamon or cinnabun may sound complicated,  but in reality it is considered to be one of the more simple updos that can be created on long hair.

Is it simple?  For some people yes.  For others, especially with extremely long or thick hair, it can take some practice to get it right. (more…)

Janine Jarman Has Grand Slam On Shear Genius 3 Episode 7

Thursday, March 18th, 2010

I had the pleasure of meeting Janine Jarman some years ago at the point in her career when she was just opening her amazing Hairroin Salon.  Since that time I have watched Janine grow into a world class celebrity and high fashion hairdresser.

It’s almost as if Janine was a rare flower and I have had the special privilege of watching her blossom over the years.

I was so thrilled when I heard Janine was going to be on Shear Genius 3.

While I’ve watch Shear Genius 1 and 2, I was not nearly as obsessed with every little detail as I am for Shear Genius 3.  Maybe because I’m rooting for Janine to win.

Imagine my glee when Janine swept both the Shortcut Challenge and the Elimination Challenge on the seventh episode.

Janine started with a bang when she took an African American model and designed a spectacular custom updo for her.  Not only did Janine do any amazing job of creating a winning hairstyle, she won high praise from guest judge, Kimberly Kimble.   Although Brian came in second, Janine’s hairstyle was so brilliant, Brian wasn’t even a close second. Thursday, March 18th, 2010

If you’re like me you start to forget who won what during each of the competitions on Shear Genius 3.  I also forget the guest judges which rotate through every like crazy.

Sometimes the guest judges will judge only one of the challenges.  Other times they will judge both.  It appears that the guest judges were selected based on their particular expertise in the hair world.

Ding Dong The Brig Witch Is Alive On Shear Genius 3, Episode 7

Thursday, March 18th, 2010

Episode 7 of Shear Genius 3 picked up the pace with lots of thrills and chills.  There were two guest judges, celebrity hairdresser Kim Kimble and singer Estelle.  There was more filming behind the scenes at the SG3 contestants lodging and Brig’s fangs became even more visible.

(Brig - Bravo/TV - Shear Genius 3 - All Rights Reserved)

The Shortcut Challenge involved African American models who recently graduated from high school.  The challenge was dealing with styling African American hair for formal events.

The guest judge was celebrity hairdresser Kimberly Kimble who is hairdresser to Beyonce and Mary J. Blige.  I have interviewed Kimberly in the past and she is a doll.  Very knowledgeable, but a great lady.

The remaining contestants included Janine, Matthew, Jon, Brian and the evil orange haired Brig. Although Janine, Matthew, Jon and Brian all seem to get along well, Brig doesn’t seem to get along with anyone now that Amy is gone.

Brig has made it clear it’s her against Janine and Matthew who appear to be on the fast track to winning.  Jon and Brian have had successes but not compared to Janine and Matthew.

For the African American Short Cut challenge Janine told the camera “I’m super experienced with African American hair.  I’m used to the texture.  I did Lil Kim’s hair for awhile, I’m confident going into this.” (more…)

Shear Genius 3 - Episode 4 - Short Cut Challenge

Thursday, February 25th, 2010

Can this really be the 4th episode?  My my time has flown by.

The contestants were gathered in the Shear Genius salon and after a retrospective of last week, Camilla Alves appeared wearing her naturally curly hair long and sleek, tucked behind one ear.  She was wearing a gorgeous bloom to one side.

(Image of Matthew’s Flower Hairstyle From Short Cut Challenge - Episode 4 - Bravo/TV - All Rights Reserved)

Janine Jarman looked amazingly cute.  She is a doll and very petite.  So she could pull off her outfit of short shorts, ankle socks and high heels and the cutest pink top.  She had her hair pulled up.

Camilla said “Good Morning everyone.  Welcome back to the Shear Genius Nexus Salon.”  She said “It smells good in here, huh?”  The remaining contestants said in unison “it smells great.” (more…)
