Boycott Of Ben & Jerry’s Ice Cream

Thursday, September 22nd, 2011

Boycott Of Ben & Jerry’s Ice Cream

Boycott Of Ben & Jerrys Ice Cream “Schweddy Balls” will not be the flavor of choice by members of OneMillionMoms, an organization affiliated with the American Family Association.  The new Ben & Jerry’s flavor consists of vanilla ice cream with a hint of rum flavor, mixed with fudge-covered rum and milk chocolate malt balls.

The group said Friday on its website: “The vulgar new flavor has turned something as innocent as ice cream into something repulsive.  Not exactly what you want a child asking for at the supermarket.”

They recently announced a boycott of the Ben & Jerry’s new flavor called “Schweddy Balls.”  The inspiration for the new ice cream flavor originated with a 1998 Saturday Night Live comedy segment with Alec Baldwin, Molly Shannon and Ana Gasteyer.

In the sketch Baldwin plays Pete Schweddy, a baker who brings his best-selling holiday treat to share with two public radio hosts. “No one can resist my Schweddy balls,” Baldwin famously said in character.

The AFA-affiliated boycott group objects to the Vermont ice cream company’s use of the “Schweddy balls” name and its sexually suggestive pun. “It seems that offending customers has become an annual tradition for Ben & Jerry’s,” the organization added on its website. (more…)

Back To School Stress Busters For Moms And Kids

Thursday, June 30th, 2011

Back To School Stress Busters For Moms And KidsYesterday I received an AskKaren email about selecting a brand new hairstyle for Back To School from the nervous mom who was trying to help her daughter get ready for freshman year in high school.

After providing some hair suggestions the mom thanked me and said, if only you could provide other back to school stress busters.  Which got me to thinking.  What a great idea for a blog.

So what are some of the main back-to-school stressors for both moms and kids?  Experts have suggested that the fear of the unknown is the most stressful part of back to school.

It’s even more stressful when a child is entering a brand new school such as starting middle school or high school.

Listed below are some ways to minimize back to school stresses:

1.  Hair – Select easy to re-create styles that aren’t too drastic.

Avoid going with a dramatic makeover, especially close to the back-to-school date.  If the makeover goes seriously wrong or you can’t recreate the same magic at home as the stylist did in the salon you could be adding extra stress.  The best time to try out new hair styles, textures or lengths is at the beginning of the summer when you still have time to tweak the results into a workable routine. Are Our Kids Getting Fatter And Hungrier?

Are Our Kids Getting Fatter And Hungrier?
Advocate Reveals Connection Between Obesity and Hunger and How to Stop the Trend

If the war against childhood obesity was a race, America would still be at the starting line.

Are Our Kids Getting Fatter And Hungrier?Childhood obesity has tripled in the past 30 years. About one out of every three children or teens is overweight or at risk of being overweight. Because children’s bodies are still developing, the damage to organs triggers medical problems extending throughout their lifetimes, according to a report issued by First Lady Michelle Obama’s Task Force on Childhood Obesity.

Nearly 75 percent of Americans will be overweight or obese by 2019, and that condition will drag down the economy and impoverish the nation. What’s worse is that our nation is growing fatter at the same time it is growing hungrier. Another study by New York’s Food Research and Action Center describes another dilemma — a new definition of hunger that actually describes how families can become obese at the same time they are going hungry.

“The term the scientists used is ‘food-insecure,’” said Erin Baker, founder of Erin Baker’s Wholesome Baked Goods a (www.ErinBakers.com) bakery that combines the appeal of baked goodies with nutritional benefits to help fight obesity. “It describes the condition that hits a huge sector of the population. Low-income people tend to seek out cheaper food which in most cases is fast food, the result is a high calorie diet with poor nutritional value — just a lot of empty calories void of fruits, vegetables and grains. Kris Jenner Spills Kardashian Family Secrets To Kathie Lee Gifford

Sunday, March 27th, 2011

Kris Jenner Spills Kardashian Family Secrets To Kathie Lee GiffordKris Jenner was the guest co-hostess with Kathie Lee Gifford on Friday’s Today Show (March 25, 2011).   It turns out Kathie Lee and the mom to the Kardashian Family go way back, “135 years” according to Kris, but “minus 100 years” for approximately 30 years as “long term friends.”

Kris who was sitting in for the absent Hoda Kotb spilled a few Kardashian secrets including “the first time” she met Kathie Lee her name was “Kathie Lee Johnson.  That’s how far back we go.”

The TV reality mom confirmed The Kardashians are in their fifth season on E!”, but the reason Kris decided to do a reality show in the first place was because Kathie Lee suggested it in the first place.  Kris chided Kathie Lee “You”  and pointed to her.  “It’s her fault.  She was the one who said ‘you need to do a reality TV show.’ And then of course we go out and get a reality show and she says ‘why are you doing a reality show?”  Kris sounded exasperated “I can’t win with her.  I’m just doing everything you taught me.”

Kathie Lee explained “I’m glad you’re happy and so successful at it (the reality show) but you guys are out there on a limb half the time.”  Kris agreed “we are out on a limb”.  Kathie Lee “at first I was concerned because I am the godmother to your two littlest girls.” (more…)
