Other hotly sought after Christmas gifts included select Beanie Babies in the 1990s, Tickle Me Elmo in 1998, Pokemon in 1999 and PlayStation 2 in 2000.  In 2002 the hot product was Nike Air Force 1 and 2004 saw a buying frenzy for the iPod mini and Nintendo DS. 2005 launched frenzied searching for Xbox 360 and iPods.

The beauty and hair industry has had their own list of desirable fragrances, gift sets and even accessories like Conair’s past braider tools and HairDo’s Jessica Simpson clip-in hair extensions.

Contrary to popular knowledge, product scarcity, whether in the hair, beauty, toy or electronics industries is a deliberate marketing ploy utilized by savvy product companies who understand the mystique of desirability. (more…)

A  recent media report about beauty trends in Beirut by Natacha Yazbeck (AFP) underlined how the spa and salon trade was focusing their marketing efforts on Lebanese children, as young as 4 and 5 years of old.

Little girls, as the report goes, are being encouraged to learn about basic beauty care at an early age.  This learning process includes receiving lush chocolate facials as well as luxurious manicures and pedicures.

Although first thoughts might be that the children are being excessively pampered, Maya Hilal, 34, the owner of Spa-Tacular, located in Beirut’s trendy Ashrafieh district was quoted as saying “it’s not about spoiling our children” but instead “it’s a matter of maintaining their cleanliness. One of my ongoing challenges with hair, beauty, cosmetics and the like is to figure out ways to keep my information fresh, exciting and unique.

That may sound easy-peasy, but it’s not.  Afterall, other than cool marketing names, lots of old standby hair and beauty products just turn up their cool factor by throwing up some edgy names.

Case in point is the new hair “custards” and other food sounding names.  Somebody in the world of hair and beauty discovered that dessert sells.

Afterall, Jessica Simpson used to have a line of edible body creams.  Key words in that sentence is “used to”  Does a sexy or yummy new names really change anything about the formulation?  Usually not but it can create a new buzz.  Until some other edgy names hit the fashion, beauty and hair media. Did you know that SpaRitual is a sister company of Orly?  I didn’t know that until I caught up with a long lost acquaintance of mine who I bumped into at Cosmoprof last July.

We chatted about what’s new at Orly, which is the company she works for.  She asked me if I had checked out SpaRitual (I had and I love it) because it’s a sister company product line.
