In a dramatic gesture last week by the American Idol (AI) judges Casey Abrams was sparred final elimination.  Abrams was as shocked as everyone else that Randy Jackson, Jennifer Lopez and Steven Tyler used their one save of the season to keep Abrams.  Ironically their save was relatively early in the AI season.

On Wednesday’s show a sober Casey Abrams who has had a haircut and a shave was told by Jennifer that she didn’t regret saving Abrams and was happy she did so.  The audience seems to love Abrams but it was the audience votes that put him at the very bottom last week.

As a result of Abrams save last week, two AI contestants had to go home this week.  The women continued to fall on the sword with a dreadlocked Naima Adedapo and a long haired Thia Megia being sent home.

Although I was sad to see two more women go, I wasn’t surprised at all after watching the March 30th performances.  Adedapo applied a reggae twist to an Elton John classic song which the judges didn’t go wild over.  Megia also left a lot to be desired with her rendition of a John son.  America made the correct choices.  I actually was surprised Adedapo lasted as long as she did. Although I had a strong feeling that Ashton Jones was doomed to be sent home in American Idol’s Season 10 first audience based elimination, I was sad to see her hair leave the stage.  Making it into the bottom three along with Karen Rodriquez and Haley Reinhart, Jones got the audience influenced boot.

While I agreed Jones didn’t do Diana Ross’ “When You Tell Me That You Love Me” justice, I loved her big beautiful bouncy curls.  She was a diva-in-training and Jennifer Lopez obviously loved her attitude on stage.  Unfortunately gorgeous natural curls, a smokin hot body and a sassy attitude just doesn’t cut it on American Idol.  Especially this year with the stellar talent the three AI judges let through the gates to the Top 13.

It was a little surprising how many of the top 13 stumbled on Wednesday night.  Karen Rodriquez is clearly a favorite of Judge Lopez and Rienhart is known for her unusual range and vocal textures.  Both Rodriquez and Rienhart turned in lackluster performances.  Rienhart’s rendition of Selena’s “I Could Fall in Love” was especially disappointing.

Jones had the opportunity to sing for her life one more time near show’s end, but her thin, reedy vocals were not much better than the previous night.  Jones appeared determined to go off the show with a bang.   Jones broke down in tears, the judges deliberated, but it was a no-go.  (more…)

I’ve mentioned in a previous post how much I loved Naima Adedapo’s unique fashion style and her amazing long hair locks which are perfectly elongated.

Naima continued to showcase her unique hair and fashion style on the Wednesday, March 9th episode of American Idol with her own rendition of Rihanna’s famous “Umbrella”.

Unfortunately while Naima turned her hair and fashion up a notch, her performance was a step in the wrong direction.  Unfortunately she was noticeably off-key and did an unusual set of dance moves.

Yes, she took a lot of risks with her hairstyle, her fashions and her high top laced up sneakers.  She even took a risk with her song and reggae inspired performance.

Tonight, Thursday, March 10, 2011 the results will be in and time will tell if Naima is booted off for her risky off-key singing.  If she lives another week it will be interesting to see if she tones down her look, her hair or selects a more appropriate song.   The judges were very kind about her performance but at the end of the day it’s the fans who have final say if Naima will get the hook.

Although I didn’t enjoy her singing, I hope she sticks around a little longer so I can eyeball her always interesting hairstyles.

Last week New Yorker Pia Toscano brought the house down and won the very standing ovation of Season 10 on American Idol.  But could the raven haired Pia bring the magic again?

Not only did she bring it, she took it to an even higher level.  As I listened to her sing Celine’s Dion’s “All By Myself” I broke out into goosebumps up and down my arms, legs and back.

By the time Pia had finished I was in tears, sobbing my heart out.  My god, could she be any more talented?  I can’t imagine how.   Compared to the rest of the AI woman contestants she is head and shoulders above them.   Rarely do I vote for anyone on American Idol, but I couldn’t resist voting for Pia.

Before she performed Pia said she “loved Celine Dion” because she has such an amazing voice and she’s family oriented.

The 22 year old New Yorker reported she chose “All By Myself” because “it’s so emotional.”  She also said her father instilled in her the belief that she has “to rehearse, to rehearse, to rehearse.”  Pia noted “now I can finally sing it because I’ve rehearsed so much.”  Pia said she hoped she would made her father proud.

After performing an absolutely perfect rendition of Celine’s song Pia received an emotionally charged standing ovation.

Jennifer Lopez was literally speechless.  After Pia finished singing Jennifer just kept shaking her head in disbelief.  She said to Pia “I think a lot of people were thinking.. what were you going to do to top last week’s (performance)?  Jennifer shook her head “There it is.  Really, really beautiful.”

Steven Tyler said “That was the sum total of all the work” you’ve done to date.  He also told her “You just slammed it.  That was beautiful.”  Finally he wished her “Happy International Woman’s Day today.”

Hard nosed Randy Jackson was also blown away.  He told Pia I’ve been here awhile “This is Season 10 and we always tell people that the big three are Mariah, Whitney and Celine and ‘don’t tackle those songs if you can’t do them.’  You know that Celine can slay these songs.”  He continued “You hit the songs dead on.  You have such a natural gift.  Dude, I love it and I’m in awe.”  High praise indeed from Randy.   He summed up Pia’s performance by saying “Very hot, dope, cool performance.”

Even Ryan Seacrest congratulated Pia on getting all of those famous Randy words strung together at one time.

Besides doing a series of amazing mouth dropping, eye popping performances, Pia confessed she’s having a great time during her stay on American Idol.  She explained that living in the American Idol Mansion is “Like a big happy family.”  Good news for Pia who has values family over everything else.

How To Copy Lauren Alaina’s Long Lush Waves

Follow the steps below to re-create Lauren’s American Idol hairstyle:

1.  Cleanse hair in lukewarm water according to your favorite method such as Diluted Shampoo (DS), Conditioner Only (CO), Low Poo (LoPoo) or Water Only.  Select a product which is best for your hair type, texture and current condition.
2.  Rinse with lukewarm water and gently squeeze excess water out with your fingers.
3.  Apply a rinse-out conditioner from the top of your ears down to your ends.
4.  Detangle strands with your fingers or a hair-friendly smooth wide-tooth comb.  Work from the ends up to the roots.
5.  Rinse conditioner from hair and finish with a cool/cold rinse.
6.  Towel blot to remove excess water from strands.
7.  Apply leave-in styling cocktail consisting of leave-in conditioner, defristant and styling cream, mousse or gel. (more…)
