Katy Perry and Lady Gaga have pushed the  boundaries of hair color introducing an array of shocking shades from neon pink, purple and blue to lime green, orange and red.

As I mentioned in a recent blog, tangerine orange has been deemed the it color for hair, cosmetics, fashions and accessories.

Obviously neon colors, whether tangerine or not, are huge for 2012.  Make-up maven Bobbi Brown has thrown her lip glosses into the Day-Glo ring with a collection of Neon Lip Glosses ($23 each) which instantly allows anyone to channel Nicki Minaji, Katy Perry or Lady Gaga with a quick swipe.

At first glance the Neon Lip Glosses might seem like just too much but in all fairness the Bobbi Brown glosses are sheer.

While they look very intimidating in the packaging, when applied, they’re actually quite sheer.  Which means that you can walk on the Neon wild side with just a tiny pop of color.

Do you ever wonder where hot new hair colors originate?  I used to ponder that very question until a famous New York colorist told me yearly hair color trends spring from the interior design world.  At first I didn’t believe her.  Then I did a little research and discovered she was right on.

Not only does the interior design world influence those stunning hair colors your favorite celebrities showcase on the Red Carpets, the industry also has an impact on fabrics, patterns and overall design styles.

If you want a sneak peak of what to expect with regard to hair color and style trends you can look to the Pantone Color Institute® which  picks a color for every new year.  In 2011 the official Pantone color was Honeysuckle or PANTONE 18-2120.

Honeysuckle was replaced in 2012 with Tangerine Tango, described by the Pantone Color Institute® as “sophisticated but at the same time dramatic and seductive,”  Leatrice Eiseman, executive director of the Pantone Color Institute® describes Tangerine Tango as “an orange with a lot of depth to it.”

It’s definitely a spirited reddish orange which provides a major energy boost.  It is definitely the appropriate color for 2012 as the world seeks to move forward, rebuild and recharge.  While you might not think of orange as sophisticated, when fused with red it definitely has that sense of drama and seductiveness. The UK’s Mirror recently shared some photos of rock icon Kylie Minogue with big curly hair.  Her gigantic tresses could beam her back into the 60s or the 80s in a snap of the fingers or a click of the beaming machine buttons.

The Mirror was covering the news that Stylist magazine let 25 fashion designers, including Tom Ford and Chanel, dress Kylie up in a variety of stunning fashions.

The beautiful outfits were finished with eye popping, mouth dropping make-up and hair including Kylie rocking big bad hair studded with curls around the edges.

Kylie appears on the cover of Stylist Magazine for February 2012 which celebrates her amazing career spanning 25 years..  Ironically this world famous talent is being celebrated while the world mourns the passing of Whitney Houston.

Are 90s Hairstyles Making A Comeback?

The UK’s Guardian, is reporting a return to the 90s and it’s decade of anti-fashion, major grunge and heavily tousled hairstyles.

Are we seriously headed for round two of The Rachel (Jennifer Aniston), Donna Mills or Meg Ryan’s famous tousled shag or Demi Moore’s shaved head (GI Jane)?

Or what about the various renditions of the bob hairstyle which was very popular for those wanting to achieve a more finished style than some of the popular grunge inspired hair.

Donna Mills was one of the stars of TV’s Knots Landing which ended its long run in 1993.   Her early 90s shaggy hairstyle was much admired for it teased sexy layers and heavily frosted edges.

Johnny Davis, deputy editor of Esquire and former editor of The Face told The Guardian “Trends have a tendency to move in 20-year cycles,” says “In retrospect, we’ve come to realise that the 1990s was a very fertile period.”

It’s not really surprising that there’s a renewed interest in the 90s.  Recently there’s been a proliferation of grunge on the catwalk.  For spring/summer 2012, D&G sent its models down the catwalk in signature 90s printed handkerchiefs worn as dresses. Isabel Marant re-purposed 90s-style hi-top trainers alongside over-sized flannel shirts.  Archetypal 90s label Versace was back doing couture for the first time in 15 years. In an interview with BehindTheChair.com, in March of 2007, when asked about his favorite color he said “I love pink!  Who doesn’t?”   Does his love of pink extend to the hot new hair color trend sweeping the Red Carpets and fashion runways?

New Hair Inspiration

Probably.  Why?  Even though Ted doesn’t specialize in hair color (his partner Jason Backe is the color guru) he strives to keep hair “fresh each season.”

The famous hairstylist searches for new hair inspiration during his travels, by reading books and looking deep within himself to decide new directions to take his work. His favorite locations for gaining new inspiration includes The South of France, the Caribbean and New York City.

The Texas born hairstylist originally dreamed of growing up to become a Dallas Cowboy football player.  Life doesn’t always take us where we think we want to go and luckily for his many hair clients, Ted’s early life as part of a military family opened his eyes to beauty in many cultures.  After achieving great success in barber school, he knew that he wanted hair to be his life.
