Debra Messing Divorce Drama

Sometimes couples stay together for the sake of the children.  In the case of actress Debra Messing and her husband Daniel Zelman, they’re living together in order to continue to raise their son as a family.

The difference is that Us Weekly broke the news this week that the 43 year old actress and her husband of ten years have mutually agreed to separate and ultimately divorce.  Yet the couple with their only son is still living together. “The decision was mutual,” Messing’s rep told Us in a statement. “They remain supportive of one another and committed to raising their son as a family.”

There’s lots of reasons these days that people who are divorce, getting divorced or attempting to celebrate still live together.

Due to the current economy and job market all sorts of unusual couple situations have evolved.  If the couple wish to divorce but can’t afford to move into separate residences there could be the need to co-habit while working towards a divorce.

While at first thought this might seem to make things awkward for Debra and Daniel, apparently not.  How committed? A source told Us that the former couple “have been separated the better part of the year but continue to live together in New York for Roman,” their 7-year-old son.

The family recently relocated from Los Angeles to NYC (where Messing and Zelman first met as NYU students), where she’s been filming Smash, the buzzed-about new NBC series due in February.

The split is “very amicable,” a source revealed.  Despite their formally secret separation, Messing and Zelman attended Bette Midler’s Halloween bash in matching costumes. The former Will and Grace actress gushed to the media last month about her family’s holiday plans in NYC.

“We love to go skating at Wolman rink, and go see plays . . . Looking forward to putting on the snowsuit and stomping through Central Park.”

Meanwhile Debra is getting ready to return to NBC in a new series which will premiere in early 2012.  It’s receiving lots of buzz,  maybe even more sore than her unusual marital situation.
