How To Curly Hair – Julianna Marguiles

Emmy-winner Julianna Margulies has naturally curly hair.  When she first won the hearts of fans on TV’s ER the lovely brunette wore her hair with super tight ringlets.

Now that she plays an aggressive and ambitious attorney on The Good Wife, her hair is either bone straight or has slight waves.

When Julianna attends awards shows like The Emmy Awards or The Golden Globes she tends to wear her hair pulled up into a variety of sleek twists both on and off screen.

Julianna rocked the 2011 Emmy Red Carpet when she appeared in an eye popping, mouth dropping white Armani prive gown which showed off her amazing figure.  Her ornate gown was strapless which allowed for a variety of up or down hairstyles.

Hairstylist Matthew Monzon created a glamorous Old Hollywood look which some fashion watcher suggested was reminiscent of Veronica Lake.    The hairstyle worked in perfect harmony with her stunning gown.

1.  Julianna’s freshly cleansed damp hair was treated with Leonor Greyl’s Lait Luminescence Bi-Phase Detangling Milk (see link above).  The product was applied from the middle of the hair shaft down through the ends.  Monzon was careful not to over saturate Julianna’s hair with the Detangling Milk.  He made sure it was well-distributed.
2.  The celebrity stylist then combed Leonor Greyl’s Mousse au Lotus Volumatrice through the hair with a wide tooth comb.
3.  Working horizontal sections, Julianna’s hair was blow-dried with a round brush (with a large barrel).
4.  A deep side part was created on the left side of Julianna’s hair.
5.  The top portion of the star’s hair was set in self-adhesive style rollers to help add volume. Before rolling each section of hair Monzon spritzed it with Leonor Greyl Voluforme Styling Spray for lush fullness. (See link below)
6. A curling iron with a 1½ inch barrel was used to barrel-curl and set the bottom most layer of Julianna’s hair in a uniform direction.  After each section was curled, the hair was rolled around the fingers and pinned to the scalp to allow the hair to set and completely cool.
7.  Another layer was created on top of the first bottom layer.  This layer was also barrel-curled, but the sections were curled in an opposite direction from the first layer.

8.  This curl pattern was continued up the back of Julianna’s hair working layer upon layer.  The direction of the curl pattern was alternated for each layer of hair.   It’s important to alternate the direction of the curl from layer to layer to encourage Julianna’s hair to cascade down the back of her head in soft waves.
9.  Once the entire back of Julianna’s hair was separated into layers, barrel curled in opposite directions and then pinned to the scalp, Monzon removed the adhesive rollers from the top of the head.
10.  The newly released hair was brushed through with a 100% boar bristle brush and then finger combed to create into a single soft wave positioned across Julianna’s forehead extending from the deep left part.
11.  Once the front wave is positioned perfectly in place the pins were removed from the back.
12.  The back curls were finger picked and arranged to create a stunning creation of soft waves and curls cascading down the back of Julianna’s head from the crown of her head.
13.  A few of the curls were gently pulled and positioned over Julianna’s shoulder.
14.  Once the hairstyle was completely finished it was spritzed wit Leonor Greyl’s Laque Souple Light Styling Spray for hold.

Summary

Julianna’s Emmy look was stunning and was the perfect hairstyle to offset her gorgeous Armani gown.  Her natural curls were incorporated into the hairstyle but her hair looked like a cross between Old Hollywood and a modern style.
