Only 7 Percent Of US Women Love Their Hair

According to a survey conducted by Dove, only 7 percent of women in the United States love their hair.

Although I wasn’t interviewed by Dove, I feel fortunate that I’m one of those 7 percent of the women in the United States who actually love their hair.  Not only do I love my hair, I’ve been loving it for the past 20 plus years when I made the decision to grow it super long.  Of course what works for me and my hair doesn’t necessarily work for anyone else.

Dove teamed up with actress Rashida Jones for their Make Friends With Your Hair campaign and contest to allow women across the country to vent about their hair struggles and hopefully help them love their hair.   The project surveyed 1,000 U.S. women to find out how much they loved their hair.  Unfortunately not many loved their hair.

It was interesting to note that the survey also found that African American women (14%) were the most likely to vote that they loved their hair compared to other races.

Some of the other findings of the Dove survey include the following facts:

- Hair Care is a higher priority in a woman’s morning routine than eating breakfast (45% versus 41%), applying makeup (39%) and extra sleep (35%).

- On an average day 58% of women said they use three or more hair care products to manage/tame their unpredictable hair.

- 1 in 5 women have skipped attending a social event as a result of unpredictable hair (or because of a bad hair day).

It is truly sad that only 7 percent of women in the US love their hair.

Do only 7 percent of women in the United States and 14% of African American women love their hair because there is so much pressure from the media for women to maintain unrealistic hair standards?  Or do women feel pressure from peers, family members or others to wear their hair a certain way and when they aren’t able to do that, they hate their hair as a result?  What’s behind these low statistics?  I for one certainly want to know.
