Summer Hair Damage Repair How ToFall is on the horizon, which means that it’s time to address the visible damage caused to your hair by weeks of summer breakage, frizz, dryness, and color fadeout.

To get help repairing the harmful effects of the summer sun, the humidity (oh, the humidity!), salt water and chlorine (not to mention the color process that we got in May to kick-off the sun-kissed season), celebrity stylist Nathaniel Hawkins, whose clients include Adele, Jennifer Lopez, Carrie Underwood, Rachel Weisz and Maggie Gyllenhaal, among others, has boiled down the best tips-and-tricks to strengthen and revitalize stressed locks for fall.

A few of Nathaniel’s tips for reversing hair damage and preventing additional stress are below:

1. Skip the salon

To restore over-processed hair and get a fall look which is straight from the runway, treat yourself to a professional-worthy straightening treatment in the comfort of your own home.

There are plenty of safe, effective and fool-proof do-it-yourself products which will deep condition and help to reverse damage caused by the summer season.

Nathaniel recommends Keratin Earth, a formaldehyde-free, four-step process that can turn even the most unmanageable hair sleek & smooth. The best part? The treatment lasts up to three months! 2. Moisturize!

Summer strips your hair of the essential oils which make it shiny and manageable. To rebuild and hold on to those essential oils, wash your hair every other day.

Whether your hair feels dry or not, always use a moisturizing shampoo and conditioner. The season’s sun, salt water, and chlorine constantly sap your hair’s moisture, which will leave it parched.  Remember to moisturize, moisturize, moisturize!

3. Quench your locks

Use a lightweight leave-in conditioner every single time you get your hair wet. It will help with snags, snarls and frizz.  It will revitalize your locks in no time.

4. Before you get wet…get wet

Dry hair is like sponge – it soaks up as much moisture as it can.  If you’re about to take a quick dip in the poo, or swim in the ocean, wet your tresses beforehand. This way, your hair will absorb less damaging agents found in salt water and pools.
