Hair Makeover Risk Factors

Hair Makeover Risk FactorsHair Makeover Risk FactorsIf you wake up one morning and decide that you must change your hair promise yourself you’ll wait at least 72 hours before taking the hair makeover plunge.

Why?  When a hair makeover goes wrong it’s almost always because it was done impulsively without thinking all the ramifications through.

Actress Vanessa Hudgens is a great example of a hair makeover that sent seriously wrong.  In all fairness, Vanessa cut her hair for a film role.  However, her new hairstyle isn’t going to go away overnight.

Big hair changes must always be thought out regardless of how you’re feeling at the time.   Bad make-up can be washed up or returned to the make-up counter.  Bad clothes or shoes can also be returned or donated.  But bad haircuts, fringes or colors can’t be instantly reversed.

If you absolutely can’t control your urge to have an immediate hair makeover, head to your favorite wig store and spring for a great new wig or clip-in strands.

Risk Factors

Hair Makeover Risk FactorsHair Makeover Risk FactorsWhen you still must go with an instant hair makeover,  consider the following hair makeover risk factors listed below:

Know Your Hair Texture

Before jumping into a makeover understand your hair texture and select a haircut and style which supports, not fights against, your natural texture.  One of the biggest mistake hair makeover candidates make is thinking they can makeover their natural textures.

As an example, if your hair is long and fine or thin, it will look stringy when layered.  Naturally curly, coily or kinky hair will most likely not work in a pixie or short bob haircut.

Consider Your Facial Features And Shape

While a medium-length bob may look amazing on Jennifer Aniston it may not look as great on all face shapes or ages.  The same is true with bangs.  Consider your facial features when selecting a drastic new haircut or style.

Try On Texture Changes Before Making A Long Term Commitment

Chemical relaxers, straighteners or similar re-texturing treatments can sometimes be harsh and potentially damaging to tresses.  This is especially true if hair has been previously color or chemically treated.

If you have naturally curly or wavy hair and lust after bone straight strands, spring for a professional quality blow out at the salon to see how you look with straightened strands.  If you love the look then you can decide to go with a more extended treatment plan.

Start Slow With Any Color Changes

Hair Makeover Risk FactorsHair Makeover Risk FactorsIt’s always easier to go back and have more hair cut off then it is to have hair put back on.  Yes, there’s always clip-in and fusion style extensions, but it’s best to start slow with a drastic hair length change.

Opt for having a few inches cut off rather than going with a major chop.  Many reputable hairstylists will actually refuse to perform a drastic hair change without doing it in stages.

Ditto for drastic hair color changes.  In many cases it’s impossible to instantly go from raven black to platinum blonde or vice versa.

If you want to alter your current hair color, opt for subtle highlights, low lights or possibly a demi or semi-permanent rinse applied to enrich your current base hue.  Avoid going more than two shades lighter or darker than your current hue.

Avoid Combining Chemical Treatments

If you decide to go with hair color then forgo any other chemical treatments.  If you prefer to go with a relaxer, straightener or perm, then skip the hair colors.  Although it’s possible to combine hair color and other chemical treatments, there should be at least a two week lapse between the chemical treatments to make sure hair can handle the various processes.

Consider Lifestyle And Maintenance Issues

Some chemical treatments may result in a root line or require ongoing touch-ups.

When you’re used to wash and wear hair or  options to wear hair up in ponytails or twists you may have a hard time adjusting to a short pixie or bob.

If you’re not used to ironing your tresses to change the texture you may be surprised how much time daily styling can add to your schedule.  Keep all these factors when undergoing a drastic hair makeover.
