Carole King Rocks Natural Curly Hair For Meredith Viera
On NBC’s Today Show Meredith Viera said goodbye after five years. The show had a Special Farewell To Meredith. Of course the show was filled with all kinds of surprised.
Matt Lauer told the viewers “one of the ways we like to celebrate around here is with a little music. There’s one song that sums up how we all feel about Meredith.”
He turned to Meredith and said “in fact you mentioned one time that you played it (the song) 30 times in a row when you graduated from high school. The song will be played by none other than legendary Carole King.”
Meredith choked back tears and said “I know what this song is.”

A lovely silver haired Carole King (born February 9, 1942) with a luscious white streak extending from her hairline came out onto the stage and sat down at a baby grand piano. Her beautiful natural curls were cascading down around her shoulders into perfect ringlets. Meredith greeted Carole who said “we’re really going to miss you. It’s been so amazing having you in our lives on a daily basis. But thank you for so many great memories. You do have one of these. Many of them.”
Carole started singing and playing “You’ve Got Friends”. Meredith wiped away tears and rested her head on Matt and Al’s shoulders while Carole sang and played the piano.
When the song was finished Carole hugged Meredith who told her “I really did play that like 30 times and sat on my bed and cried.” Matt said “Carole was so nice to arrange her schedule to be here. She’s got new music coming out, but she wanted to be here for you.
Carole said to Meredith “I’m honored to be here for you.” Meredith said “I’m honored to have you. Thank you. Your music is a theme in my life. So it’s such a pleasure.” Carole shook her head and smiled. Matt said “by the way, you’re performing in Central Park.” Carole said “I am, with the Robin Hood Foundation.”
Carole is famous for rocking her natural curls throughout her amazing career. King and her former husband Gerry Goffin wrote more than two dozen chart hits for numerous artists during the 1960s, many of which have become standards.
As a singer, King’s album Tapestry topped the U.S. album chart for 15 weeks, in 1971, and remained on the charts for more than six years.
In 2000, Joel Whitburn, a Billboard Magazine pop music researcher, named her the most successful female songwriter of 1955-99, because she wrote or co-wrote 118 pop hits on the Billboard Hot 100.
King has made 25 solo albums, the most successful being Tapestry. Her most recent non-compilation album is Live at the Troubadour, a collaboration with James Taylor, which reached #4 on the charts in its first week, and has sold over 400,000 copies.
She has won four Grammy Awards and was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame for her songwriting.
In 2009, Carole King was inducted into the “Hit Parade” Hall of Fame. She holds the record for the longest time for an album by a female to remain on the charts and the longest time for an album by a female to hold the #1 position, both for Tapestry.
Could there be anyone more appropriate to say goodbye to the legendary Meredith Viera? Obviously Meredith has many friends around the world. It was a very special and touching moment to say goodbye.
