Facing Rosacea

“FACING” ROSACEA
The American Acne & Rosacea Society Offers New Treatment Guidelines

Facing RosaceaIf you’re grappling with the symptoms of rosacea and haven’t visited your dermatologist lately, you owe it to yourself to schedule an office visit. Rosacea, which affects millions of Americans, is actually enormously under-treated, mostly because people try to handle it without medical guidance.  Rosacea experts believe former Bill Clinton has all the classic symptoms including rosy skin and red bumps.

The American Acne & Rosacea Society (AARS), however, has made it much easier for dermatologists to correctly identify rosacea and help people get their rosacea symptoms under control.

Their newly issued Medical Management Guidelines help define this disease more precisely than it has been before and offers myriad treatment options . . . options that are effective if selected and used appropriately.

Effective Treatment Correlated with Quality of Life

According to the authors of the guidelines, dermatologists, James Q. Del Rosso, DO, Hilary Baldwin, MD and Guy Webster, MD, president elect, current president and immediate past president of the AARS, respectively, effective treatment of rosacea has been correlated with a marked improvement in quality of life.

Since rosacea has been shown to adversely affect self-esteem to the degree that many people with rosacea avoid social interaction, it is important to get effective treatment early on. Yet many people are slow to obtain medical help thinking their “rosy” skin and “red bumps” will eventually subside.

For individuals with pronounced symptoms such as broken blood vessels, raised red bumps and thickening of the skin on and around the nose, the disease is often conspicuous enough to cause strangers to ask if they’ve been drinking too much alcohol or experiencing a bout of teenage acne.

New Guidelines Offer New Possibilities

New medical management guidelines take a comprehensive look at all the topical and oral medications that physicians have been employing in rosacea treatment and examine them in the light of new research and new FDA (Food and Drug Administration) and CDC (Centers for Disease Control) concerns about issues such as antibiotic resistance.

Since the AARS is comprised of leading research and clinical dermatologists, the guidelines, approved by the AARS Board of Directors, have been developed to take a broad look at available  treatment possibilities.

Available on the AARS Web Site

For anyone who is concerned about rosacea a visit to the AARS web site www.acnesociety.org will allow them to view the new guidelines and hopefully encourage them to seek medical help.

“People suffer from many diseases for which there isn’t much help,” commented Dr. Del Rosso, “but rosacea is now very manageable.  And, for a disease that is so visible, it is encouraging to know that the symptoms can be managed effectively, helping to make it less obvious and less ‘present’ in one’s daily life.”
