Beautiful Skin - Chemical Versus Natural Principles

The principles behind beautiful skin start with a description of its function.  Quite simply, skin is the outer covering of the body.

For humans skin is the largest organ of the integumentary system made up of multiple layers of ectodermal tissue.  Skin guards the underlying muscles, bones, ligaments and internal organs.  Obviously very important to hold everything together.

Human skin is similar to the covering of most other mammals except it's not protected by a pelt and appears hairless although in fact nearly all human skin is covered with hair follicles.

There are two general types of skin, hairy and glabrous skin. The adjective cutaneous literally means "of the skin" (from Latin cutis, skin).

Function Of Human Skin

Skin protects the body against environmental toxins, pathogens and even excessive body loss.  The skin is also the largest excretion organ, eliminating bodily waste through its pores. Its oily glands secrete sebum, which maintains the elasticity of the skin's surface. The water skin storage helps metabolic reactions, minerals and vitamins absorption.

It's other functions are insulation, temperature regulation, sensation, synthesis of vitamin D, and the protection of vitamin B folates. Severely damaged skin will try to heal by forming scar tissue. This is often discolored and de-pigmented.

In humans, skin pigmentation varies among populations, and skin type can range from dry to oily. Such skin variety provides a rich and diverse habit for bacteria which number roughly a 1000 species from 19 phyla.

Important Functions Of Skin For Body

Skin has many important functions in our body such as: protection, excretion and nourishing. It protects against UV rays by absorbing and converting them into dark pigment to prevent further damage.

Toxins are all around us in today's world.  Skin products which contain chemicals can leave behind a trail of preservatives (parabens) which have shown up in a range of body tissues including breast, brain, lung, colon and kidney tissues.

Possible Toxic Impact Of Skin And Body Care Products

Due to the toxic impact of some skin and body care products more people are turning to organic alternatives.  Use of organic herbs and oils are becoming more popular due to their toxic free properties.  For the most part organic skin and body care products have minimal or no side effects.

Since the skin is so closely tied to the body, natural and organic treatments and products are key to building inner as well as outer health while feeding and building upon the beauty of the skin.

Optimal Requirements For Beautiful Skin

For optimal performance human skin requires consistent sources of vitamins, minerals, essential fatty acids (EFA), water and proteins for cell regeneration and strength.  Although some people think of the skin only for it's potential to be beautiful, in reality it holds major importance to all the organs of the body to guarantee overall health and vitality.

Unfortunately there is a lot of controversy over what is really organic and natural when it comes to skin and body care products.  Sometimes pure and natural skin and body care products are mixed with chemical ingredients for marketing purposes.

Mixing And Matching Chemicals With All Natural Ingredients

Just like some consumers become upset with organic hair care products do not lather, others become upset with their skin and body products are not pristine white and full of fragrance.  Unfortunately creamy white lotions and creams often come with the price of added bleaches and chemicals to create the hue.  Totally natural creams and lotions are free of bleaches, whiteners and other chemical additives.

When it comes to beautiful skin and true organic and herbal formulations, mixing and matching chemicals, additives and preservatives with herbs and organic ingredients offers no advantages.  Including just a handful of natural or organic ingredients is not enough to promote important skin related metabolic reactions, elastin or other metabolic production.

Chemical Ingredients In Skin And Body Care Products

Many chemical ingredients in a formulation that also contain natural ingredients can induce oxidation of the last releasing free radicals that can damage the skin.

On the other hand, chemical substances can mimic similar structures with natural active constituents and compete for the same cell receptors. The result is the diminishing of the effects of the natural constituents.

Some chemicals are very difficult to eliminate from the skin due to their unrecognizable structure and tend to accumulate in different parts of the body and even block the skin pores makes the toxin elimination very difficult.

Summary

Exercise caution when selecting any skin or body products listed as natural.  Always read the ingredients and be conscious of what is listed even in a natural product.  Marketing and advertising can cloud the true ingredients and whether they are 100% organic or not.

Evaluate all the ingredients in your skin and body care products as you would with any prescription medications you might ingest.  Remember, even skin and body care products can trigger a range of side effects.
