Keir Gilchrist As Marshall On United States Of Tara

Keir Gilchrist is part of a powerful demographic as the very authentic Marshall Gregson on Showtime’s “United States Of Tara”.

I can not tell you how much I love this quirky but real series starring Emmy Award-winner Toni Collette as Tara who is a woman struggling with multiple personalities. Not only is Toni fabulous in the role, but the entire supporting cast is amazing.

Keir Gilchrist plays Marshall, Tara’s youngest child, a serious young man who is grappling with his sexuality while juggling the demands of dealing with a mother who has multiple personalities.

Will she be the rough and tumble Buck or the juvenile T? Or maybe he’ll be greeted by Alice, the perfect suburban housewife.

I love how his hairstyle, awareness of interest in fashion and his love of cooking all reflect his emerging personality and sense of self.

Meanwhile Keir is brilliant in the role. He is so authentic and believable that I want to send him a greeting card to cheer him up as he struggles with finding his way through his recent acknowledgment of his true sexuality. He is a child in constant emotional peril although is dad Max, played wonderfully by John Corbett (Sex And The City) tries hard to normalize the family lifestyle.

If Keir Gilchrist’s performance doesn’t touch the viewers, it’s because they have become desensitized by ever increasing traumatizing plots involving family dysfunctional behaviors that shock and horrify.

In a recent episode Keir’s character Marshall finds himself in danger while cruising for gay sex at a local park. It was borderline over the top but did allow Keir to act his heart out about his confusion over how to be a healthy young gay man.

Academy Award-winning creator Diablo Cody and her collaborators have created an innovative role for Keir and he takes it and runs with it. Although I used to pay only modest attention to his teen fulled sexuality angst, now he has become one of my favorites on the show after Tara and Max.

Although the main plot of the Showtime series is Tara’s attempt to figure out the origin of her numerous “alters” the show offers insights into the struggles of her entire family from her two children to her equally dysfunctional sister Charmaine played amazingly by Rosemarie DeWitt and her visicous mother played by Pamela Reed.

Ironically The United States of Tara offers a lot of comedy mixed into the drama. While Marshall is dealing with some serious matters, he also can flip to be hilarious and multi-dimensional.

Unfortunately Keir, who is still in his teens, does not quality for an Emmy with it’s cutoff age of 25. What a shame. This young man deserves to win all the awards in his category. He is truly amazing. Can you say hot, young star?
