Molly Ringwald and Matthew Broderick were introduced to present a special tribute to writer, director and friend to teens everywhere, John Hughes.

Molly started by saying “in life there’s always that special person who shapes who you are.  Who helps you determine the person you become.  For me that person was John Hughes a brilliant writer, director and friend who saw something in me at the age of 16 I didn’t even see in myself.  But John saw something in all of us.  His genius was in seeing the pain in growing up and relating it to everyone.  His gift was creating characters, stories and truth about being a teen and bringing them to film in a way no one has ever done before.  It is why his influence endures.”

Matthew said “as an actor, I just listened to John and did whatever he told me.  And thanks to him, for the last 25 years nearly everyday someone comes up to be and taps me on the shoulder and says ‘Hey Ferris (Ferris Buehler) is this your day off?’  To me, John was a friend, a mentor, a private man, a family man and in his own quiet way, one of the funniest human beings I’ve ever met.”Molly Ringwald, Matthew Broderick, Bratt Pack Honor John Hughes At 2010 Academy Awards

At that point several film clips were presented which formed a very touching tribute to the amazing writer, director and producer, who tragically died in August of 2009 from a fatal heart attack.  The first clip was from “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off.”  There were also clips of “Pretty in Pink”, “The Breakfast Club” and “Home Alone.”

An interview was shown with John where he said “I base a lot of material in my pictures on my life on my childhood.”

He also said “it’s so important to belong to something at that age.  As you’re trying to identify yourself.  Who am I.  Where do I fit.  Where do I belong in all of this?  That pressure to belong is so enormous.”

After the clips were shown, some of the Brat Packers he turned into major stars – Jon Cryer, Anthony Michael Hall, Judd Nelson, Ally Sheedy and Macaulay Culkin joined Ringwald and Broderick on stage to say a few words and honor Hughes’ family, who was in attendance.

Jon Cryer said “John created characters that were familiar.  Almost painfully ordinary but at the same time transcendant and iconic.  Anthony Michael Hall said “John gave us the gift of laughing and understanding.”

Judd said “he had the gift of treating young people not as children but as developing adults.  Ally said “when you get older, your heart dies.  Ironic words written by a modern Peter Pan.  A man who refused to get older.”

Macaulay said “John always treated me with dignity, even the tiny 9 year old version of myself because that’s what he did.  He treated people with respect.”

Matthew said “with us tonight are members of John’s family.  The family stood up and Matthew said “thank you for coming” and to John he said “and John, Danke Schoen.”
