It was announced that Mark Boal had two Academy nominations but this was his first Oscar win.

Mark accepted his award and said “oh my god.  Wow.  Thank you Academy.  I mean, you honor me and humble me with this.  More than you know.  I was a reporter back from Iraq with the idea for a story about these men on the front lines are in an unpopular war.  I thought it might make a movie.  The results wildly exceeded my expectations and that is thanks to so many people.  To Summer Entertainment, to our amazing cast and crew and first of all to one extraordinary individual filmmaker, Katherine Bigelow.  This belongs to you.

He continued “I would also like to thank and dedicate this to the troops, the 115,000 who are still in Iraq and the 120,000 in Afghanistan and the more than 30,000 wounded and 4,000 who have not made it home.  And my father who didn’t live to see this but inspired me and got me up here.  He passed away a month ago and he would have really liked this a lot.  Thanks a lot.”

The Hurt Locker is a very compelling film which follows Staff Sgt. William James in the Iraq war as he risks his life defusing bombs. His behavior becomes reckless, and his sargent starts to worry about his behavior. The film is nominated for 9 Academy Awards.
