Kate Hudson Red Carpet Chignons And Knots For 2010Beautiful blonde Kate Hudson admitted to Elle magazine that in order to prepare for her newest role in the movie Earthbound, she abstained from alcohol and lost 20 pounds!

“And I love my glass of wine. I love tequila,” Kate said. “To be in New York for two weeks and not have one beverage! I’m not sure I’ve ever done that.”

The pain of no alcohol certainly was worth it.  Kate Hudson was the Queen of The Red Carpets at the recent 2010 Golden Globes and Screen Actors Guild (SAG) Awards.

At both events the stunning blonde wore her hair in glorious hairstyles to accent her beautiful winter white gowns.

2010 Golden Globes

Kate Hudson Red Carpet Chignons And Knots For 2010At the 67th Golden Globes the 30 year old Kate was resplendent in a white hot Marchesa strapless silk crepe structured gown (from the Marchesa bridal collection) with a long train.  Her accessories included Casadei’s Signature 3504 triple platform pumps, and a bracelet by Stephen Russell Contemporary Collection. The stark white skirt was flared which worked perfectly with Kate’s body.

Kate, who was one of the presenters at the Globes recently turned up her acting buzz by her singing and dancing performance in “Nine”.

At the Golden Globes she wore her hair in a soft nape neck tucked under twist.

Her celebrity hairdresser, David Babaii, has been Kate’s mane man for quite some time and together they have coiffed Kate in an amazing array of Red Carpet hairstyles.

For the 2010 Golden Globes David coiffed Kate’s tresses in a combo style which was elegance married to California cool.  Afterall, Kate is a native California girl who loves her beachy blonde strands.

At the 2010 SAG Awards where Kate was also a presenter, she was breathtaking in a white Emilio Pucci gown with a sexy bare back accented by a tassel necklace and some crystal embroidery at the hip which broke up the expanse of white.

All About Kate’s Hair

Because Kate Hudson wore two extraordinary gowns at the Golden Globes and SAG Awards, all the focus was directed towards the stunning fashion creations and accessories.

Kate, who according to David Babaii, “has naturally wavy hair with some curl” is very open to having David “do whatever” to her hair to make it look gorgeous.  As a result of Kate’s willingness to let David unleash his hairstyling creativity on her, the celebrity hairdresser, who has a long list of A List clients, “is constantly thinking of amazing new hair designs for Kate”

The actress who has some of the top hair colorists in the world attend to her blonde tresses, has a medium golden blonde base with interwoven baby white blonde highlights and darker golden lowlights for beautiful dimension and movement.

Because she is a free spirit, David often builds in softness and flow around her hairline, even when pulling Kate’s tresses back into chignons or soft messy knots which often rest at the nape of her neck or just slightly above.

How To Steal Kate’s Red Carpet Hairstyles For 2010

Both of Kate’s hairstyles were similar in the fact that they both were swept up and off her face with lots of lush volume built into the top and crown areas.

How To Recreate Kate’s Golden Globe Hairstyle

The Golden Globe chignon had extra volume built through the crown with a section of hair adjacent to the hairline sculpted to flow up and across the border of her forehead and sloped seductively down the side of her face in a long faux sleek sideswept fringe which was draped back over one ear and captured at the back of her head, a few inches above her neck.

Kate’s hair was sleek and full of volume along the top with a back chignon consisting off all sections of her hair pulled into a knot with individual barrel curls sculpted on top of the basic knot.

1.  Start with newly cleansed and 100% dry hair which has been prepped with the appropriate leave-in conditioning and styling cocktail designed to block frizz and pump up the volume.  Since Kate’s hair is naturally wavy with a little curl, it would have been blow dried straight with a round brush to create movement.  A volume enhancing spray would have been applied to the roots.

David has said that when he blows out Kate’s wet hair he parts her hair into 4 sections (both sides and crown leaving the nape area free). This helps achieve the perfect blow dry and provide more overall control.  He also applies a hair polish or heat protection product to her strands before applying heat.

2.  Use a flat iron to remove any kinks, waves or curls to have a perfectly sleek look.

3.  Separate section of hair along the top of the hairline and direct it over to one side, draping it back towards the neck.

4.  Using a brush or fingers, direct rest of the hair on the remaining side and along the top towards the back of head to create a ponytail.  The base of the pony will rest at the middle of the back of the head halfway between the crown and the neck.  Gently push the hair up towards the crown with your fingers to guarantee maximum volume along crown.

Kate Hudson Red Carpet Chignons And Knots For 20105.  Secure the pony with a hair friendly elastic in the same color as your hair.   Select one strand of hair and wrap over the top of the elastic.  Pin to the underside of the pony base.

6.  Separate ponytail strands into 1-2″ sections.  Using your fingers, sculpt into barrel curls which are pinned in a circle around the base of the pony.  Pin the curls with bobby pins the same color as your hair to camouflage their existence.

7.  When finished, spritz entire hair twist with a light holding spray. Optionally you may add a tiny dab of shine serum to the palms of your hands and swipe over the top of the entire hairstyle for added shimmer.

8.  If desired you can add a small jeweled barrette or hair clips to one side of the knot.

How To Recreate Kate’s SAG Hairstyle

Kate’s SAG chignon had volume built through the crown but instead of a sweeping section of hair, her hair was pulled directly back from the hairline.  Another key difference was that the top and both sides of her SAG hairstyle was carefully raked with fingers to create separation and piecey-ness from the hairline back towards the crown.

Step By Step Instructions For SAG Awards

1.  Start with newly cleansed and 100% dry hair which has been prepped with the appropriate leave-in conditioning and styling cocktail designed to block frizz and pump up the volume.  Since Kate’s hair is naturally wavy with a little curl, it would have been blow dried with a long finger diffuser to encourage the natural texture to form.

2.  Apply a styling cream to the hair to encourage the tousled appearance along the sides and top.

3.  Using a brush or fingers, direct all of the hair on the sides and along the top towards the back of head to create a half ponytail.  The base of the half pony will rest a few inches below the crown.  Gently push the hair up towards the crown with your fingers to guarantee maximum volume along the top and the crown.  Allow rest of the hair to remain loose.  In essence you will be creating two ponytails.

4.  Loosely secure the top pony with a hair friendly elastic in the same color as your hair.   Select one strand of hair and wrap over the top of the elastic.  Pin to the underside of the pony base.

5.  Using fingers or the long tail of a comb, gently rake through the top and sides to create soft separations.

Kate Hudson Red Carpet Chignons And Knots For 20106.  Separate top pony strands into 2-3″ sections.  Using your fingers, sculpt into loose twists or curls which are pinned  circle around the base of the top pony.  Pin the curls with bobby pins the same color as your hair to camouflage their existence.

7.  Gather the remaining hair into a bottom pony resting a few inches below the top pony.  Wrap the bottom pony into a messy knot style.  The key is to arrange the knot so that it is very soft and tousled to work with the top of the hairstyle.

8.  When finished, spritz entire hair twist with a light holding spray. Optionally you may add a tiny dab of shine serum to the palms of your hands and swipe over the top of the entire hairstyle for added shimmer.

Keep in mind that both of Kate’s hairstyles were created by a master celebrity hairstylist who has had a lot of experience coiffing her strands.  If you would like to recreate either updo be sure to allow lots of time for practice.  If you own hair is not long enough to create the knots, consider add-in clip-in strands to help you achieve the length or volume needed.

Summary

Since the 2010 Award Season is not over yet, time will only tell what other amazing gowns and hairstyles the blonde and beautiful Kate Hudson will showcase on the Red Carpets.
