Art McMaster President, CEO Of Miss America Talks About Winning The Pageant

Art McMaster serves as President and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Miss America Organization. He works closely with the Organization’s Board of Directors to lead and manage all organizational operations including finance, administration, security and production.

Additionally, Mr. McMaster oversees an organization with fifty-two state scholarship programs, sponsorship development and serves as executive producer of the Miss America Pageant.

Art McMaster brings more than 20 years of international financial and executive management experience to his position. He joined the Miss America Organization in 1999 as Controller. Mr. McMaster was promoted to the position of Vice President of Finance in 2000, Acting President / CEO in 2004 and Permanent President & CEO in 2007.

Mr. McMaster understands the importance of the Miss America judges.

What qualifications does McMaster believe are most essential to be a good pageant judge?  He told Prom Time Magazine in 2007 “it’s important for judges to be impartial, decisive and able to fully understand the job they need to fill through the judging process.”  Mr. McMaster pointed out “the panel as a whole should be balanced with qualified individuals with expertise in various forms of talent, interviewing skills, understanding of the job of the titleholder, beauty, public service and the like.”

What are the questions given to the contestants designed to uncover?  Mr. McMasters explained “a smart pageant judge will use their time with the contestants to explore the contestant’s ability to fulfill the job description of the title holder.”

Indeed, one of the biggest problems ex-Miss California USA, Carrie Prejean caused for the Miss California USA Pageant officials was her inability or unwillingness to honor her title commitments.  Ultimately Carrie was replaced with the first runner up who promised to honor Miss California USA post-pageant requirements.

I have followed the reign of the current 2009 Miss America winner and she has been beyond busy.  It appears to me the Miss America winner does an amazing job of honoring her appearance commitments.   Which explains Mr. McMaster’s comments regarding the need for the pageant judges to access the contestant’s willingness to meet post-pageant obligations.

How important is dress and costumes in the talent competition with regard to winning the Miss America pageant?

Mr. McMaster also explained that “a great costume will never make up for a bad talent and a great talent will never be ruined by a bad costume.”

What does McMaster believe is the most important quality in a winner?  He told Prom Time “the pageant winner must nunderstand that the years of being a titleholder is not just about her.  It is about the influence she can have on the people she meets and the organization, community, state or nation she serves.  Ultimately she must understand the concept of “servant leadership.”

In addition McMaster explained that a successful Miss America titleholder is expected to be physically fit and represent the best of American women.

Ultimately Miss America needs to understand the very important role she plays in the lives of all the millions of people she will interact with during her twelve months of reign representing America.
