American Film Institute Announces Top 10 Movies & TV Shows of 2009

American Film Institute Announces Top 10 Movies & TV Shows of 2009 American Film Institute Announces Top 10 Movies & TV Shows of 2009 American Film Institute Announces Top 10 Movies & TV Shows of 2009

The American Film Institute (AFI) has announced its list of Top 10 movies and TV shows of 2009.  As always, there are some surprises but then that’s to be expected.

AFI honors on the big screen went to Coraline, The Hangover, The Hurt Locker, The Messenger, Precious, A Serious Man, A Single Man, Sugar, Up and Up in the Air.

Surprisingly absent was Titanic director James Cameron’s Avatar which insiders are saying is possibly the most expensive movie ever made.   Estimates place the cost at $500-million+ but studio experts are making no comment on that for the moment.

The AFI’s announcement of honors for The Hurt Locker coincidentally matched The Los Angeles Film Critics Association Awards which named The Hurt Locker as best picture of the year.

AFI singled out The Big Bang Theory, Big Love, Friday Night Lights, Glee, Mad Men, as well as Modern Family, The No. 1 Ladies’ Detective Agency, Nurse Jackie, Party Down and True Blood for their TV picks.

A 13-person jury that included scholars, film artists, critics and AFI trustees made the selections. The Institute will honor the creative ensembles at a Jan. 15 invitation-only luncheon at the Four Seasons Hotel in Los Angeles.
