UNIVERSAL CITY, Calif. – December 2, 2009 – Nicole Scherzinger (Pussycat Dolls) has been added as the third and final judge on NBC’s upcoming a cappella singing competition series, “The Sing-Off,” a four night holiday event premiering Monday, December 14 (8-10 p.m. ET).
Hosted by multi-platinum recording artist Nick Lachey, the one-of-a-kind battle of voices will continue on December 15 and 16, culminating in a live finale on December 21 (each night 8-10 p.m. ET). She is currently recording the title track for “Phantom Of The Opera” ‘Love Never Dies’ at the request of Andrew Lloyd Weber and is writing and recording several new songs for release in 2010.
Eight a cappella groups will be competing in the competition for a $100,000 prize and an Epic Records/Sony Music recording contract. Just curious what you thought of the show. To me it seems that the reality singing competitions are really getting watered down. I recently caught an episode of “The Voice”. I only think one of the singers would have had a chance to even make the cut on the early years of American Idol. When they announced an upcoming tour I almost laughed. Who would pay to see these guys and girls? What’s your thought?

Hi Sean,
Thanks for your comments. Actually I enjoyed The Sing Off because my friend Robert Hallowell was the celebrity hairdresser working on the hair for the various teams and some of the judges. He also did Nick Lachey’s hair and I adore Nick. Robert said that Nick and all the judges on The Sing-Off were just great. And of course Nick is a great guy.
However, I agree that the signing competitions are getting watered down as you mentioned. First we had American Idol which I have always enjoyed, then The Sing Off, which is a slightly different concept and recently The Voice. I agree that the talent on The Voice was iffy in some ways and certainly not like we have seen on AI in the past. Even this year on AI the talent was fantastic in my humble opinion.
Now we have X Factor starting and there is America’s Got Talent which sometimes includes singing. I adore Sharon Osbourne so I love that show for that purpose. I’ve heard there are at least 3-5 more talent type shows in the works beside the X Factor. So yes, I think the talent is getting watered down. It will be interesting to see which shows survive. The Sing Off will be doing their 3rd season in the late Fall and of course The Voice was just picked up again as was AI.
What do you think? Will the X Factor make it? And what about the new shows coming down the pipe? Only time will tell.
Thanks again for your comments and for stopping by.
Best wishes,
Karen
