Four months after a tragic car accident killed the parents of 17 year old Elena Gilbert (Nina Dobrev) she is dealing with the new reality of living with her 15 year old brother Jeremy as well as her Aunt Jenna (Sara Canning).

Good girl Elena and Jeremy attend Mystic Falls High School where Elena has always been the beautiful, popular and brainy student.  Jeremy has struggled to fit in with the right groups.

Dark brooding new student Stefan Salvatore (Paul Wesley) appears at the beginning of the new school year and immediately captures Elena’s interest.

Meanwhile her ex, Matt (Zach Roerig) and her friends are suspicious of Stefan.

If this story reminds you of the sizzling hot Twilight series, you might be own to something.  Why?  Stefan Salvatore is a secret vampire who falls in love with Elena on sight and wants to be with her.  Of course true love stories never go smoothly and such is the case with Elena and Stefan who must not only deal with Elana’s friends and family but Stefan’s nefarious older vamp brother Damon (Ian Somerhalder).

The two vampire brothers have a bitter history and have fought over women for centuries.  All indications are that the two brothers will fight to the death for control of Elena’s soul.

Fans and stars of the show are very aware of the comparisons between The Vampire Diaries and Twilight.

What does Nina think about the Twilight similarity?  She said “I mean, there are similarities. There are vampires in both shows. But they’re different. And as the series goes on, it’s going to get more different.”

Who Is Nina Dobrev?

The gorgeous brunette haired beauty if a 20-year-old Canadian whose family moved to Toronto from Sofia, Bulgaria when she was just two years old. The actress attended Toronto’s Wexford Collegiate School for the Arts while growing up on Degrassi: The Next Generation.

While doing a whirlwind of media to promote The Vampire Diaries Nina discussed herVampire Diaries character and how there is a lot of similarities between her and Elena.

She said “Elena has a lot of myself in her, and I feel I’m a lot like my character. But she has to be innocent. She’s a very different character in the books. We really wanted somebody who had a vulnerability and had a reliability and looks for the good in everyone. Things aren’t good for her right now — she’s in a tough place; she lost her parents, her brother is on a downward spiral — but she’s still trying to find the good in everyone and fix things and be optimistic. She’s trying to cope.”

Regardless of how much The Vampire Diaries may or may not resemble Twilight, Nina Dobrev is sitting pretty in the title role of the new CW series.  Her acting career is sizzling and will only get hotter as the fan base expands and Vampire Diary watchers focus on her beauty, poise and style.
