I may be totally crazy, so keep in mind I am sharing my own personal opinions about why Ellen likes The Bachelor and The Bachelorette so much.  I’m sure there are tons of reasons but I think it may possibly link back to when Ellen co-starred in the movie Edtv as producer Cynthia Topping.

Do you remember the movie?  It was definitely a reality TV type of plot.  In the movie actor Matthew McConaughey was Ed ‘Eddie Pekurny’.  He became the Ed in Edtv. The premise for Edtv was that the cameras would follow Ed constantly for 24 hours a day.  And so they did.

In the process of following Ed, who was totally unprepared for constant television monitoring, he got involved with his brother’s girlfriend, Shari (Jenna Elfman).  Ultimately the viewers who loved Ed started to really hate Shari who couldn’t take the verbal abuse heaped upon her by the media and complete strangers.

Ellen as Cynthia was pushed by her boss to “manipulate” things in such a manner as to introduce Ed to a hot new girlfriend Jill played by Elizabeth Hurley.  The result of introducing Jill into the situation resulted in a huge ratings spike.  Viola.  Edtv morphs into a version of The Bachelor and The Bachelorette.

In a very real sense Edtv, which was first released in 1999, was a precursor to the flood of all the reality TV shows which have come into play since then.

Is there a connection to Edtv and The Bachelor series?  Is that why Ellen is such a huge fan of The Bachelor and The Bachelorette series and its various players?  Will we ever know for sure?  Maybe not.  So Ellen, call me and let me know if I’m on to something here.

In the meantime, be sure to watch The Bachelor Final Rose ceremony tomorrow night, Monday, March 2, 2009 on ABC.
