First of all, I confess that I hoard magazines. In fact, I hoard more magazines than all my hair care, beauty, nail, skin and beauty products combined. Throw my shoes and two prized Coach handbags on the pile and the magazines win hands down. I have mountains of boxes full of hair, beauty, fashion, nail, skin, spa…etc etc…mags stacked floor to ceiling in my office, in my library at work and at home. I used to have a storage until filled with over 100 paper boxes of well…magazines and papers…until I decided that it was beyond crazy to rent space for my addiction.

When my friends and family give me a hard time about my magazines I always tell them I have to save them in case I find something I need. Well today my magazines came through in flying colors when I unearthed a Men’s Health (MHM) Magazine from back in 2001. There it was wedged between a Cosmo and Allure.

*what: our straight hair, like our olive oyl-slim frame, tends to be shapeless and thin. stylists have tried creating long layers for oomph, but somehow, it still always looked limp. enter szucs, who produced intricate, long layers all over the back with shorter ones staggered in front, from temples to chin. at last, a stylist who managed to cheat mother nature, endowing us with the fullness we’ve always wanted [cut, 490 and up].

*what: we have a reputation for being demanding, and that goes double when we sit down in a salon chair. our hair was months overdue for a cut, and while we wanted something different, we’d also grown attached to the shoulder-blade length. mendoza not only listened to every word, he actually understood our desires, a fact that became clear as he cut careful, chunky layers throughout the back and left a few strategic pieces long to keep the look casual. we left feeling several pounds lighter but not totally shorn. high standards never looked so good [cut, $85].

*what: the ’80s may be back in fashion, but nothing prepared us for the jose eber time warp [eber is the man who did farrah fawcett and liv taylor's hair in the '80s]. once we adjusted – somewhat – to the decidedly unsubtle decor, martin shared his philosophy: “love jagged, hate blunt. i want to give you sexy hair.” to do that, he snipped angled layers into our previously straight-edged mane, then teamed up with his assistant for a lightning-fast, four-handed blowout, and set the crown in large rollers for extra volume at the roots. we left with a slightly shaggy bob that had just enough retro kick without seeming too kitschy. this blast from the past is well worth a future trip [cut, $250].

Anne Sempowski Ward Named President and Chief Operating Officer of Fashion Fair Cosmetics

After an extensive national search, Anne Sempowski Ward, former assistant vice president of African-American Marketing for the Coca-Cola Company, has been appointed President and Chief Operating Officer of Fashion Fair Cosmetics-the world’s largest cosmetic and skin care company for women of color.

Additionally, Senior Vice-President J. Lance Clarke has been named Senior Vice-President and Director of Global Sales and will oversee the national and international sales for the cosmetics.

In Ward’s newly created role that will be effective October 1, she will lead all aspects of sales, product development, supply chain and marketing. She will also create and oversee all business development strategies and implement diversified initiatives to strengthen brand equity.
